Google’s John Mueller: WordPress Not Inherently Better For SEO

Posted by

In reaction to a thread on Reddit, Google Search Advocate John Mueller states there’s no inherent SEO advantage to using WordPress compared to coding a website yourself.

A thread in the r/SEO forum asks a familiar concern lots of specialists face in their professions.

Is WordPress better for SEO than coding your own website?

Other variations of that question consist of, “is WordPress much better for SEO than Wix,” or, “is WordPress much better for SEO than [insert CMS here]”

No matter how you ask it, the answer is always the very same.

WordPress isn’t naturally better for SEO than any other alternative. It’s one of numerous ways to construct a website that ranks in Google.

Mueller On WordPress For SEO

In action to whether using WordPress is better for SEO than coding your own website, Mueller states:

“Not for SEO, however you can focus more on the material if you don’t invest all your time creating a new CMS for yourself. (some individuals prefer making a CMS, so YMMV).”

As Mueller states, the most substantial advantage WordPress offers is the ease of use compared to by hand composing code.

However, that’s just useful to the website owner. It makes no difference to Google if a website is developed with WordPress.

This concern turns up often and deserves revisiting due to the false information flowing around WordPress and SEO.

For example, take the second-most upvoted remark in the Reddit thread straight underneath Mueller’s.

An individual claims, “Google understands WordPress well,” as though Googlebot can crawl WordPress websites more effectively than other CMSs.

That’s false, though the misconception of WordPress being much better for SEO continues to persist.
